Criticism without offering solutions is no good

Table of Contents

TL;DR: Show others how things can be done better instead of telling them that they’re not good.

# At work

When you start working at a new company you may find many things that you don’t like. In those situations it is very easy to start criticising the way things are and to offend people who worked on certain things either accidentally or on purpose. While this may feel great and give you the temporary feeling of superiority, it brings no actual value neither to your life or others.

A better approach is to just take a positive initiative on the things you care about and just show everyone how it can be done better. This can go multiple ways:

  1. You will improve something for yourself and many others around you and along the way learn a few lessons and make a few friends and people start taking your initiatives seriously, or,
  2. You will hit a few big challenges along the way and realize why things are the way they are. In some cases you’ll realize that others have tried to tackle that same issue before you and probably made more progress that you could make.

Both of the above outcomes are great as long as you take the whole path with positivity and respect towards others around you and people who worked there before you.

# In personal relations

In a similar situation, when you are in a friendship or a romantic relationship with someone and you don’t like something specific about the way they do things, just show them how it can be done better. You won’t achieve much by making others feel bad about themselves.

# Between generations

Every generation has a critique on how the previous generation has done things and although in some cases that criticism eventually leads to conversations and initiatives from people who step up to change things, in many cases it’s just nagging. Every generation has done the best they could to keep the next generation happy but it hasn’t always succeeded. The fact that we have different moral values and better education than previous generations, is a direct product of the effort they have put to get the world to this state. That doesn’t mean that they’ve done everything right, but it’s not realistic to compare different stages of history together and judge people from 20, 50, 100, 400, 1000, 4000 years ago with the knowledge and wisdom that we have available today. Today we know the extreme use of certain products have a horrible effect on the nature but to get to this point, certain paths had to be taken.

If you think certain individuals, companies, politicians aren’t doing good enough, I completely agree with you, let’s show them how to do it better instead of trying to bash them while we haven’t figured out how to do things better ourselves.
